What we do

THE PURPOSE OF AL-ANON MEETINGS

Al-Anon’s sole purpose is to aid alcoholics’ families. Al-Anon practices the Twelve Steps by embracing and comforting families of alcoholics and by providing the alcoholic with understanding and encouragement. It is essential to realize that Al-Anon is not an intervention program, and the organization’s primary objective is not to stop another person’s alcoholism. Al-Anon is for the attending individual, not the alcoholic. Only the alcoholic himself can halt him or herself from drinking. Many loved ones have believed that by providing an alcoholic with a “good reason” not to drink, they can help them cease drinking. This is not always the case, however, as the individual must be willing to transform. More than ninety-five percent of alcoholics have families, friends, and employment. They may function reasonably well, but at least one aspect of their lives is afflicted. Their drinking is a persistent and escalating problem in their lives and the lives of those they affect.
