Faces of Alcoholism

By Al-Anon Meetings

When I first walked into an Al-Anon meeting, I was afraid I wouldn’t fit in because I was different. Neither my partner nor I had a drinking partner. I wasn’t attempting to treat the alcoholism of another person. I was aware that I was the root of my own issues, but I had given up on ever solving them.

I now realize with gratitude that I was raised in a household where drinking ran in the family. Alcohol has always been a part of my life, so I didn’t think that was the issue. However, the alcoholism in my family’s past had laid the groundwork for unhealthy behavioral patterns in my life, which followed me until I found Al-Anon Family Groups.

My discovery of Al-Anon was prompted by my counselor’s advice to “find support from people other than those involved in my immediate drama.” She thought that although I had come a long way in counseling, I still needed a support structure to keep up my momentum in between sessions. I did some research and discovered the Al-Anon website’s questions, to which I primarily responded “Yes.” I was still worried, though, that I wouldn’t fit in.

When I attended my first meeting in Canada and subsequently attended meetings all around the world, I learned that Al-Anon Family Groups are made up of a diverse group of people who are looking for support and assistance in coping with the alcoholism of others. Grandparents, parents, spouses, siblings, and other disease-affected individuals make up the groups. The message of hope that arises from following the Twelve Steps and helping others is something that we all share.

My life is full with hope right now. I have had a successful career thanks to my dedication to applying the program’s principles, and this year I was promoted to Executive Director of Al-Anon Family Groups. Al-Anon resources also assisted me in becoming a better father. All facets of life are intended to be assisted by the curriculum.

Why not attend a meeting, whether it be in person, virtually, or over the phone, if you’re unsure if you belong in Al-Anon? Al-Anon meetings are offered free of charge and take place electronically around the world, around the clock. You will be greeted warmly by members, who will advise you to assess whether the program is a good fit for your situation.
